Executives from Winona and throughout Minnesota visited with students about opportunities in store management, distribution and logistics, human resources and career development<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, a typical day in the life of a Walmart manager<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0and Walmart\u2019s support for local communities. The theme, \u201cspark change\u201d,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">encouraged\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">students\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">spark change within their own careers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s2\">Many students commented that they were unaware of how much Walmart does for local communities because, as one executive said, Walmart does not often tout their community involvement. For example, Walmart was on scene with essentials before FEMA with the recent devastating flooding in Houston, Texas. \u00a0Because of their privately-owned fleet of trucks, they can reroute\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">as needed<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, delivering basics to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">communities<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0most in need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s4\">One student commented, \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s4\">I had no idea how much Walmart does for the community, and it is truly remarkable. I learned that they donate millions of dollars every year to disaster relief and food shelves. Not only do they donate money, but they are also committed to being green and helping out local businesses in town.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s4\">Perhaps the most talked about part of the day were sessions with SE Minnesota Mark<\/span><span class=\"s4\">et HR Director, Kinara Williams-Bender\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">Owatonna<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0Store Manager,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">Tabby\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">DeLeeuw<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. \u00a0They held individual meetings with students where they critiqued resumes and discussed interview techniques. Students were very pleased with the amount of advice they received that will eventually help them\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">in their future career<\/span><span class=\"s4\">. One student said, \u201cAnother thing I learned from Walmart day was a\u00a0really great\u00a0interview technique. I have always struggled with how, to be honest, in an interview while also making myself seem like I am fit for the job. They told me that instead of focusing on how honest I am being, I should reword the honesty\u00a0so that what you are saying\u00a0shows the interviewer that you are taking action towards your flaws and working to improve.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">Yet another student echoed this sentiment with the following comment,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u201cthe most important thing I got out of it was networking opportunities and valuable resume critique\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s2\"><span class=\"s4\">Students overwhelmingly expressed their genuine surprise at how valuable the experience was for all who attended. In fact, one student said it was \u201c<\/span><span class=\"s4\">one of my favorite events that have taken place in the engagement center so far.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s4\">The sentiment was shared by our local Winona Walmart Store Manager, Zach Orr.
