{"id":1199,"date":"2018-11-15T14:07:11","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T20:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/?p=1199"},"modified":"2018-11-19T11:57:13","modified_gmt":"2018-11-19T17:57:13","slug":"king-solomons-mines-influence-on-action-and-adventure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/king-solomons-mines-influence-on-action-and-adventure\/","title":{"rendered":"King Solomon&#8217;s Mines: Influence on Action and Adventure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Action and Adventure genre has blossomed into a list of sub genres that are currently taking cinema by storm with action juggernauts\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><em>Avengers Infinity War<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0(2018),\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><em>Mission Impossible: Fallout\u00a0<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">(2018), and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><em>Aliens<\/em><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0(1986). These hybrid films are growing in popularity through pop culture icons and references that set higher standards for the film&#8217;s narrative layers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most of these films would not have been produced, directed, or even written if it weren&#8217;t for the iconic style of the classic swashbuckler films produced during the golden age in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1439\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1439\" class=\"wp-image-1439 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/KingSolomonsMines1950.3254_061120180918-1-1024x667.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/KingSolomonsMines1950.3254_061120180918-1-1024x667.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/KingSolomonsMines1950.3254_061120180918-1-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/KingSolomonsMines1950.3254_061120180918-1-768x500.jpg 768w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/KingSolomonsMines1950.3254_061120180918-1-1080x704.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1439\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The stars of King Solomon&#8217;s Mines<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><em>King Solomon\u2019s Mines<\/em>,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0co-directed by Compton Bennett and Andrew\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Marton<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0in 1950, upheld the genre\u2019s progression during early Hollywood and continues to influence later films within the Action and Adventure category, such as\u00a0<\/span><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0(1981) and the <em>National Treasure\u00a0<\/em>franchise (2004, 2007). By using the narrative structure of men running around trying to find either an object or pl<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">ace and having to overcome many obstructions\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">on their<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0journey, the film displays astonishing special effects featuring dangerous animals along with dynamic characters that are comparable to other Action films .<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1201\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1201\" class=\"wp-image-1201\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/haggard-king-solomons-mines-176x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/haggard-king-solomons-mines-176x300.jpg 176w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/haggard-king-solomons-mines.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The novel the film is based on, written by Henry Rider Haggard<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Before the 1950 adaptation of <em>Kings Solomon\u2019s Mines<\/em>, there was a British version released in 1937 that was adapted from the same novel, by Henry Rider Haggard, to create a film adaptation. The series would continue with four more versions released in 1979, 1985,1986, and 2004. The film begins with the protagonist, Allan\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Quatermain<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">(Stewart Granger<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">),\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">an experienced hunter and guide who<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0reluctantly\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">agrees<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0to help Elizabeth Curtis (Deborah Kerr<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">) and her brother John Goode (Richard Carlson<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">) to search for her husband, who disappeared in the unexplored African interior while searching for the legendary titular mines. Using a copy of the map that Curtis used, the group begins their expedition. Despite Allan\u2019s attitude towards women in the jungle, he beings to become soft for Elizabeth and during the long and grueling journey, the two begin to fall in love.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Constant danger sets the mood for this film.\u00a0 The movie begins in 1897, Africa where Allan is living as a guide. The opening scene is Allan and his men attempting to take down a herd of elephants,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">while they are successful in killing an\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">elephant<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, they also lose one of their men in the process.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0The tone of the film immediately creates\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">an<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">unsafe<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0environment in which death is a prominent factor. The dangerous setting creates obstacles for the\u00a0 characters to face ranging from animals such as snakes, rhinos,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">crocodiles<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, spiders, and even other tribes of people. The action genre is not meant to be safe<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0portrays the characters as\u00a0vulnerable, depicted in the scene below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sd3LMRL2Tz4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The character\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">type<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">s in\u00a0<\/span><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">King Solomon\u2019s Mines<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"EN-US\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>are almost parallel to Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland\u2019s in\u00a0<\/span><em><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Adventure of Rob<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">in Hood<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0(1938). In fact, Flynn was offered the role to play Granger\u2019s role as Allan but turned it down and took another movie deal. The male protagonists of each film are alike in that they both are willing to risk their lives\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">to<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0keep those around them safe,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">especially<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0their women. They both display physical abilities that others around them lack while virtually appearing fearless throughout the entirety of the film. Flynn\u2019s character is different in that he is motivated by what is morally right and\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">to<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0uphold the dynasty; however,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0Granger\u2019s character is willing to go on a dangerous expedition because he is heavily persuaded with money. Lady Marion and Elizabeth are also very comparable because of the plot points of their character development. The\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">resistant<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0and reluctant woman are\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">strong-willed, feminine figures in the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">beginning<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0but become more accepting and understanding throughout the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">entirety<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0of the film. The amount of beautiful\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">scenery displayed in the film was a\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">crucial<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0selling point to the film\u2019s success. Nobody during that time period had ever seen anything like it before which\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">helped<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0Robert<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0L.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Surtees win an\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Academy<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0Award for Best Cinematography.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0score for the film consisted of a heavy African\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">dialect<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">that presents drums beating and the tribes singing their ritual songs that also added a nice touch to the vibe of the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">c<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">e<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">e<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">r<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">y<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">p<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">r<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">e<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">s<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">e<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">t<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">e<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">d<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1200\" style=\"width: 868px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1200\" class=\"wp-image-1200 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/1950-King-Solomons-Mines-07.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"858\" height=\"650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/1950-King-Solomons-Mines-07.jpg 858w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/1950-King-Solomons-Mines-07-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/1950-King-Solomons-Mines-07-768x582.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 858px) 100vw, 858px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tribe members during the battle<\/p><\/div>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">One social conflict that is unappealing to audiences today is the display of African American&#8217;s in the film. They are presented as uncultured savages that are brutal to whomever they encounter. First, out of the two people who die in the film, two are African American&#8211; suggesting that their lives are disposable and unimportant to the plot. Second, they are assumed to have cannibalistic traits and are displayed as savages as they chase the protagonist and his crew throughout the jungle. Obviously, during that era, it was alright to have suggestive things about different ethnicities but it was unpleasant viewing it in this day and era of cinema.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"text-align: left\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">In conclusion, <em>King Solomon&#8217;s Mines\u00a0<\/em>was an influential film that clearly impacted many film narratives to follow within Action and Adventure cinema. The film displays the journey of our main protagonist, who is able to display his strength and power, while also showing off the incredible affects and audio.
