This film gives viewers an inside look at Spike Lee&#8217;s own childhood, as this film is semi-autobiographical, based loosely on Spike Lee and his siblings&#8217; own experiences growing up in Brooklyn, New York.\u00a0 More than that, it is a charming, affecting, and thought-provoking slice-of-life focused more than any of Lee&#8217;s films on strong female characters displaying resistance and resilience.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tJ3njLoAmxc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Spike Lee co-wrote <em>Crooklyn<\/em> with his sister Joie and brother Cinqu\u00e9, who are listed as associate producers and co-screenwriters. Cinqu\u00e9\u00a0and\u00a0Joie Lee\u00a0originally prepared the script as a pilot for the children&#8217;s television channel Nickelodeon before converting their idea into a screenplay. The collaboration between the three siblings on the film, with both Spike and Joie playing minor supporting roles, made for a heartfelt, tender look at life through a child&#8217;s eyes growing up in a big, chaotic family that resonated with audiences everywhere.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1854\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1854\" class=\"wp-image-1854 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/crooklynC.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/crooklynC.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/crooklynC-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/crooklynC-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1854\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Carmichael Family<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Spike Lee&#8217;s own family has a very similar structure to the\u00a0Carmichael family in <em>Crooklyn<\/em>. The Lees&#8217; mother was a school teacher and their father was a jazz musician: Spike Lee is the oldest child, with three younger siblings, Joie, David, and Cinqu\u00e9.\u00a0 In <em>Crooklyn<\/em>, the mother Carolyn, played by Alfre Woodard, is a schoolteacher and Woody Carmichael, played by\u00a0Delroy Lindo, is a jazz musician.\u00a0 The film centers on the character Troy, played by Zelda Harris, a young nine-year-old girl with four brothers, three older and one younger,\u00a0Clinton, Wendell, Nate, and Joseph. She finds herself surrounded by constant chaos, her brothers causing trouble with their stubborn attitudes and rambunctiousness in the house, her parents arguing and fighting, plus the neighbors adding to their everyday life with their regular stoop hangouts and back-and-forth bickering over petty dramas.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1851\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1851\" class=\"wp-image-1851 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/36409646734_995a055f6e_b-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/36409646734_995a055f6e_b.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/36409646734_995a055f6e_b-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/36409646734_995a055f6e_b-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1851\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spike Lee speaking about &#8220;One Film, One New York&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although the storyline of\u00a0<em>Crooklyn<\/em> takes place in the 1970s and the film itself was released in 1994, it is still a much-loved New York film gaining even greater recognition in recent years. Upon its initial release,\u00a0Alfre Woodard was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and the film was nominated for\u00a0Best Family Motion Picture &#8211; Drama and\u00a0Best Performance.\u00a0 In 2017, the film won the contest &#8220;One Film, One New York,&#8221; in which New Yorkers voted on which of five city-related films should be shown at free screenings in cinemas and parks at the same time, on the same day, September 13, 2017, across the five boroughs of New York. <em>Crooklyn<\/em> was voted the viewers&#8217; favorite for the honor, beating out <em>On the Town<\/em>\u00a0(1949), <em>New York, New York\u00a0<\/em>(1977),\u00a0<em>Desperately Seeking Susan\u00a0<\/em>(1985), and <em>The Wedding Banquet\u00a0<\/em>(1993).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1877\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1877\" class=\"wp-image-1877 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/05-Crooklyn-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/05-Crooklyn-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/05-Crooklyn-600-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1877\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zelda Harris as Troy in Crooklyn<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What makes <em>Crooklyn<\/em> so unique and special is its focus and emphasis on the strong female characters, the mother, Carolyn and her only daughter, Troy. Carolyn is the matriarch of the Carmichael family, acting as the main financial source when the father can&#8217;t find work, and keeping all of her five rowdy kids in line and held responsible for their actions with a strong, firm hand. Troy is shown to be smart, charismatic, and resourceful as such a young child, following proudly in her mother&#8217;s footsteps to be every bit as strong-willed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0For her performance as Troy, Zelda Harris earned universal acclaim and a nomination for a Young Artist Award for Young Actress Starring in a Motion Picture.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1863\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1863\" class=\"wp-image-1863 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/crooklyn_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/crooklyn_1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/crooklyn_1-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carolyn (Alfre Woodard) is the strength and core of the Carmichael family<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Spike Lee is known for taking creative risks with his films, and <em>Crooklyn<\/em> is no exception. Viewers can expect some of his usual stylistic flourishes, such as the floating double-dolly shot that takes a drug-addled Troy on a nighttime high.\u00a0 Another is when the Carmichael family travels south to visit their relatives in Virginia: there is a subtle, but noticeable visual shift that occurs in how the film is presented. This disorienting effect is created by shooting in widescreen without anamorphically adjusting the image, so that what viewers see looks oddly compressed.\u00a0 Some viewers have thought they were experiencing technical difficulties or viewing a bad copy of the film, but the effect is fully intentional, as Lee has mentioned in several interviews.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1868\" style=\"width: 861px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1868\" class=\"wp-image-1868 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/screen-shot-2014-05-13-at-2-27-59-pm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"851\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/screen-shot-2014-05-13-at-2-27-59-pm.png 851w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/screen-shot-2014-05-13-at-2-27-59-pm-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/screen-shot-2014-05-13-at-2-27-59-pm-768x424.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 851px) 100vw, 851px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One section of the film is presented in a disorienting, distorted anamorphic widescreen intended to convey Troy&#8217;s perspective<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The soundtrack of <em>Crooklyn<\/em>\u00a0will get you grooving along with the film, featuring classics beloved\u00a0by many, including Spike Lee. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2017\/09\/spike-lee-looks-back-on-crooklyn.html\">In an interview with <em>Vulture<\/em>, Lee stated how proud he was of the soundtrack: &#8220;That\u2019s the music I grew up with. I always pick all the music to my films. The ups and downs\u00a0 the Carmichael family goes through causes them to grow and bond even deeper as a family, by learning to appreciate what they have and what not to take for granted in their everyday life. <em>Crooklyn<\/em> is the third film showing in our Spike Lee film series, and the admission is free and open to the public.
