{"id":2198,"date":"2019-05-14T07:15:33","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T12:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/?p=2198"},"modified":"2019-05-14T09:45:04","modified_gmt":"2019-05-14T14:45:04","slug":"dance-as-storytelling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/dance-as-storytelling\/","title":{"rendered":"Dance as Storytelling in School Daze &amp; Do the Right Thing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Director Spike Lee uses dance as an illustrative mode of storytelling throughout his filmography, from the colorful, classical proposal sequence in <em>She&#8217;s Gotta Have It<\/em> to the ballroom juke and minstrel-show tap in <em>Malcolm X<\/em> and <em>Bamboozled<\/em> to the late-night soul groove in <em>BlacKkKlansman.<\/em> In <i>School Daze <\/i>(1988) and <i>Do the Right Thing <\/i>(1989), dance is used as a vehicle for the disenfranchised, persecuted, and misunderstood. The following visual essay from Jenna Grochow and Josh De La Rosa analyzes scenes from each, with the first being <i>School Daze<\/i>\u2019s<i> <\/i>\u201cGood and Bad Hair\u201d dance number, and the second being\u00a0<i>Do the Right Thing<\/i>\u2019s opening credits sequence.
