{"id":843,"date":"2018-09-21T11:37:41","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T16:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/?p=843"},"modified":"2018-09-21T11:37:41","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T16:37:41","slug":"2018-winona-state-film-series-resilience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/2018-winona-state-film-series-resilience\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 Winona State Film Series: Resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello and welcome all to our Winona State Film Series this fall, tied to the university theme of &#8220;Resilience.&#8221;\u00a0 Resilience is defined by the ability to overcome adversity and show elasticity to continue to fight against the odds.\u00a0 Each film we have chosen for this series will show examples of resilience, as well as work together as a cohesive whole featuring artistic and creative cinematic merit.\u00a0 Film screenings are free admission for all and will be shown on the Winona State campus in the Miller Auditorium (Stark Hall 103).<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">7:00 pm Tuesday, Oct. 2nd<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><em>Resilience: The Science of Stress and the Biology of Hope\u00a0<\/em>(Directed by James Redford, 2016)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/We2BqmjHN0k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kicking off the series is a 2016 documentary with the namesake of the series theme,\u00a0<em>Resilience.\u00a0<\/em>James Redford&#8217;s documentary shows the work being done by both medical and education professionals to understand trauma experienced by children as well as the short and long term effects Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have on all forms of health.\u00a0Researchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the new documentary\u00a0<em>Resilience<\/em>\u00a0reveals, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death.\u00a0This screening will have a panel of child advocacy professionals to discuss issues the film raises: scheduled to appear are Ruth Charles (WSU Social Work), Angela McQuinn (WAPS Social Work), and Kyann Brown (Winona Health Occupational Therapy).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>7:00 pm Tuesday, Oct. 9th<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Moonlight\u00a0<\/em>(Directed by Barry Jenkins, 2016)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9NJj12tJzqc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Moonlight\u00a0<\/em>leads off the feature films in this series and is an excellent transition into character and storylines centering around childhood trauma.\u00a0 Studio A24 found a critical darling and award circuit hit (culminating with a Best Picture win) with the well-crafted coming-of-age drama, and the unique film perfectly captures the resilience needed to rebound in the face of poverty and abuse.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">7:00 pm Friday, Oct. 12th<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Eight Grade\u00a0<\/em>(Directed by Bo Burnham, 2018)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y8lFgF_IjPw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The series continues the theme of resilience necessary for teenage adolescent life, with Bo Burnham&#8217;s surprise indie hit of the summer,\u00a0<em>Eight Grade<\/em>.\u00a0An introverted teenage girl tries to survive the last week of her disastrous eighth grade year before leaving to start high school.\u00a0 Much like A24&#8217;s indie darling\u00a0<em>Lady Bird<\/em> last year,\u00a0<em>Eight Grade<\/em> provides a great balance of comedy and emotional heft for a Friday night show.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>7:00 PM Monday Oct. 15th<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><em>Time for Ilhan <\/em>(Directed by Norah Shapiro, 2018)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vQ8uivoe36U\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/vQ8uivoe36U<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Making the rounds at documentary film festivals this year,\u00a0<em>Time for Ilhan\u00a0<\/em>represents a Minnesota story about the first Somali-American woman to hold political office, Ilhan Omar.\u00a0 The perseverance and resilience shown by Omar in the documentary adds spirit and represents the diverse culture of America.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">7:00<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0pm Tuesday, Oct. 16th<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><em>Hunt for the Wilderpeople <\/em>(Directed by: Taika Waititi, 2016)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dPaU4Gymt3E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Known for his comedic talent behind the camera, Taiki Waititi brings a fun and adventurous film to the middle of our series.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Hunt for the Wilderpeople\u00a0<\/em>follows a national manhunt ordered for a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the wild New Zealand bush.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>3:00 pm Sunday, Oct. 21st<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<em>The Kid <\/em>(Directed by Charlie Chaplin, 1921)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UBX2Yy2dqg4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another year, another Chaplin film.\u00a0 This marks the third straight year we have featured a Charlie Chaplin film in our series, and\u00a0<em>The Kid\u00a0<\/em>centers around &#8220;The Tramp&#8221; caring for a young child even at the expense of other relationships.\u00a0 Serving as a light and fun matinee,\u00a0<em>The Kid<\/em> is a perfect dose of classic cinema on a Sunday afternoon and a reminder that Chaplin&#8217;s tramp knew well how to develop resilience against life&#8217;s indignities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>7:00 pm Tuesday Oct. 23rd<\/strong><\/span><em><br \/>\nThe Shape of Water<\/em>\u00a0(Directed by Guillermo del Toro, 2017)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/caj2OoFUXsQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second Best Picture winner in this series,\u00a0<em>The Shape of Water<\/em> is an artistic and cinematic tour-de-force from visual filmmaker Guillermo del Toro.\u00a0 A unique relationship is birthed between a lonely janitor who seeks to free an incarcerated aquatic creature.\u00a0\u00a0<em>The Shape of Water<\/em> provides a blissful aesthetic experience while reinforcing themes of love, compassion, and resilience.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>7:00 pm Saturday, Oct. 27th<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<em>Won&#8217;t You Be My Neighbor? <\/em>(Directed by Morgan Neville, 2018)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FhwktRDG_aQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The third and final documentary in the series is one of the most discussed and revered films of the year.\u00a0 <em>Won&#8217;t You Be My Neighbor?<\/em>\u00a0 documents the life of Fred Rogers, beloved child entertainer from the hit PBS show\u00a0<em>Mr. Rogers&#8217; Neighborhood<\/em>. The exclusive look behind-the-scenes shows a genuine man who strove to deliver love, joy, and happiness to all in the world, especially children.\u00a0 This documentary makes for a perfect Saturday night viewing experience for all ages.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>7:00 pm Tuesday, Oct. 30th<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<em>A Quiet Place\u00a0<\/em>(Directed by John Krasinski, 2018)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WR7cc5t7tv8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Our series concludes with our Halloween week special, the horror\/suspense thriller\u00a0<em>A Quiet Place<\/em>.\u00a0 Actor-director John Krasinski crafts a well designed thriller that features a family who must rely on each other to overcome mysterious creatures that have infiltrated their world.\u00a0 This screening demands a community viewing for all the scares and thrills around every corner.<\/p>\n<p>We will be providing previews and reviews of each film throughout the series.
