Guillermo del Toro)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The next film in our\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #41a62a\" href=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/2018-winona-state-film-series-resilience\/\">Resilience Film Series<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is, like <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/preview-moonlight-2016-dir-barry-jenkins\/\"><em>Moonlight<\/em><\/a>, a recent Best Picture Academy Award winner: Guillermo del Toro&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Shape of Water,<\/em>\u00a0which won the Oscar just this past February.\u00a0 The film is rated R for sexual content, graphic nudity, violence, and language.\u00a0 More than that, though, it is a singular vision of resilience created by one of the leading auteurs of world cinema and a unique aesthetic experience.\u00a0 Please join us in seeing it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/865286413667091\/\">on the big screen on October 23\u00a0 at 7:00 pm in Miller Auditorium (Stark Hall 103)<\/a>.\u00a0 Admission is free and the public invited!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XFYWazblaUA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Released late last year,\u00a0<em>The Shape of Water\u00a0<\/em>is a challenge to describe: it&#8217;s a mix of adventure, romance, melodrama, science fiction, and fantasy that defies easy categorization.\u00a0 Set in the 1960s, the plot follows Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a lonely custodian at a top-secret research facility, who forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature being held captive. He is a film director, screenwriter, producer, and novelist whose work has alternated between idiosyncratic passion projects like <em>Pan&#8217;s Labyrinth<\/em> and<em> The Devil&#8217;s Backbone<\/em> and more commercial fare like <em>Pacific Rim<\/em>. Over the years he has developed his own trademarks, a few of which can be seen in\u00a0<em>The Shape of Water<\/em> including casting Doug Jones (as Amphibian Man), visually striking creatures, underground areas, and complex set designs. In the male-dominated 1960s, she wishes only\u00a0to find someone who can understand her struggles and share a nonverbal bond in nonverbal communication.\u00a0 These adverse conditions require her to demonstrate resilience through an ability to recover from misfortune.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seejane.org\/research-informs-empowers\/the-see-jane-100\/\">According to The See Jane 100<\/a>, in Hollywood films male protagonists outnumber females by more than double (59% to 26%), with far more screen time (61% to 39%) and speaking time (64% to 36%).\u00a0 These figures may be slowly improving but they still show how women lack a voice in major releases.\u00a0 Films like\u00a0<em>The Shape of Water<\/em>\u00a0can help inspire other girls and women, so they can make a change and be resilient.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_916\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-916\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-916\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/Cover-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/Cover-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/Cover-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/Cover.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cover image of The Shape of Water, featuring Sally Hawkins as Elisa and Doug Jones as Amphibian Man.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s also rate that a major award-winning film features a mute protagonist using sign language to communicate.\u00a0 Two of the year&#8217;s major films&#8211;this and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/331907567372411\/\"><em>A Quiet Place<\/em>, which we are showing the following week<\/a>&#8211;feature American Sign Language prominently, if in very different circumstances and environments.\u00a0 There&#8217;s been some debate as to whether the use of sign was realistic in <em>The Shape of Water<\/em> and if its narrative ultimately ascribes agency to Hawkins&#8217; character.\u00a0 Is a woman&#8211;a woman with a disability&#8211;free to choose whom, or what, she loves?\u00a0 To be a part of a dominant, hearing-enabled society?
