Bo Burnham)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you ready for <em>Eighth Grade<\/em>?\u00a0 The third film in our <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/2018-winona-state-film-series-resilience\/\">Resilience Film Series<\/a> is the breakout indie comedy of the year, directed and written by Bo Burnham, showing Friday Oct. 12th, at 7 pm in Miller Auditorium (Stark 103).\u00a0 The film is rated R, and admission is free and open to the public.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KnesHAtSHzs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You may know Bo Burnham best for his comedy routines as a stand-up comedian, and for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/boburnham\/\">YouTube channel he started in 2006<\/a>\u00a0that currently has over 1.5 million subscribers, as <em>Eighth Grade<\/em> is his first feature film and directorial debut. His YouTube channel uploads are comedic, ranging from him sitting in his room with his keyboard making raps to videos of him doing his stand up routines. Kayla is attached to her phone at the hip, using it almost as much, if not more, than she interacts with people face to face. She uses her social media platforms as a tool to connect and express herself, the main one being YouTube, where she uploads videos to her channel with the goal of giving others like her advice on topics such as &#8220;being yourself&#8221; and &#8220;having confidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_930\" style=\"width: 646px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-930\" class=\"wp-image-930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/3723e0_a93c74bfc8fd4ca1b6754b4379b06a2a_mv2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/3723e0_a93c74bfc8fd4ca1b6754b4379b06a2a_mv2.jpg 636w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/3723e0_a93c74bfc8fd4ca1b6754b4379b06a2a_mv2-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-930\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elsie Fisher as Kayla in Eighth Grade<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Like the first two films in the our series,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/review-resilience-the-biology-of-stress-and-the-science-of-hope\/\"><em>Resilience<\/em> <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/review-moonlight-2016-dir-barry-jenkins\/\"><em>Moonlight<\/em><\/a>, Burnham&#8217;s film examines a child&#8217;s difficult experiences and how they use coping mechanisms. <em>Resilience,<\/em> in particular, showed how simple it is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2015\/03\/02\/387007941\/take-the-ace-quiz-and-learn-what-it-does-and-doesnt-mean\">assess one&#8217;s own\u00a0ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) score<\/a> and understand how trauma can cause physical and emotional impact for the rest of an individual&#8217;s life. In\u00a0<em>Eighth Grade<\/em>, the fact that Kayla&#8217;s father is the only parental figure in her life is one likely source of her anxieties.\u00a0 Her experience may not seem as dramatic as Chiron&#8217;s in <em>Moonlight,<\/em> but they&#8217;re no less important a transition from\u00a0childhood into adulthood.<\/p>\n<p><em>Eighth Grade<\/em>&#8216;s R rating surprises many: it&#8217;s a film focused on a narrative of a young teenager, but thirteen and fourteen-year-olds currently in eighth grade are unable to see the film without a parent or guardian&#8217;s permission. <em>Eighth Grade<\/em> discusses sexual topics briefly, but no actions occur or are shown between any characters in the film. There is some foul language that some may find inappropriate. In my thinking, though, the rating is unfortunate, for <em>Eighth Grade<\/em> tries to present the characters in a way eighth graders actually talk and topics they would discuss among each other. Many news and film review sources, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2018\/01\/eighth-grade-review-bo-burnham-directorial-debut-coming-of-age-sundance-1201919005\/\">IndieWire<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/summer-movies\/2018\/7\/13\/17561970\/eighth-grade-review-bo-burnham\">Vox<\/a> have written that parents should ignore the R rating and take their eighth graders and other older kids to see the film because they are the ones who need to be seeing it most.<\/p>\n<p>Bo Burnham himself fought back against the R rating by having free screenings just for eighth graders across the country, specifically so that they would be able to see the film.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Since Eighth Grade is rated R and that\u2019s sort of stupid we\u2019re doing free screenings in every state this Wednesday with no ratings enforced. Come watch, kids! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iJi8nkmz0v\">https:\/\/t.co\/iJi8nkmz0v<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Bo Burnham (@boburnham) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/boburnham\/status\/1026548708047958017?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 6, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>What makes <em>Eighth Grade<\/em> so great is that it is a fresh look at what it\u2019s like to be an eighth grader in the digital, social media-driven age we live in today.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s the kind of funny that makes you cringe and laugh in a way that is all too familiar, by giving you second-hand embarrassment from the awkwardness of being in a thirteen-year-old\u2019s shoes all over again.
