Taiki Waititi)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>If you were to take a 1990s Jim Carrey, send him to the present, and turn him into an accomplished director, you might get filmmaker Taika Waititi.\u00a0 Perhaps the most personal of Waititi\u2019s films (which include the 2017 smash <em>Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>), <em>Hunt for the Wilderpeople<\/em> is the fifth film in our <a href=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/2018-winona-state-film-series-resilience\/\">Resilience Film Series<\/a> and will be showing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/307534680023159\/\">Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in Stark Hall\u2019s Miller Auditorium<\/a>. The film is rated PG-13, and admission is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n8Xvsjy57X0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Taika Waititi&#8217;s name is still just short of popular recognition, but his star is growing, and he will soon be one of the most sought-after directors in the world. And for good reason, too: his surefire direction and storytelling prowess mixed with his trademark zaniness make any project he undertakes an absolute joy to experience. This impressive set of skills has also earned him acclaim with the people he has worked with. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noted.co.nz\/culture\/movies\/sam-neill-why-taika-waititi-deserves-new-zealander-of-the-year\/\"><em>Wilderpeople<\/em> co-star Sam Neill (of <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> fame) once wrote that Waititi deserved New Zealander of the Year for his contribution to the arts community<\/a>. Taika Waititi on set of Hunt for the Wilderpeople<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Breakout star of <em>Hunt for the Wilderpeople<\/em> Julian Dennison (best known for his role in the 2018 film <em>Deadpool 2<\/em>) is another force to be\u00a0reckoned with. The fourteen-year-old actor approaches his role of foster child Ricky Baker with a sincere dedication. He never suffers from the pitfalls which plague adolescent actors, and delivers a thoughtful performance that gives audiences a glimpse into the mind of a troubled youth. His comedic timing is also a terrific foil to Sam Neill\u2019s cantankerous senior \u201cUncle\u201d Hec Faulkner, Baker\u2019s reluctant foster father who is suffering from the recent loss of his wife.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_991\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-991\" class=\"wp-image-991 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/I-RickyBaker.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/I-RickyBaker.jpg 620w, https:\/\/academics.winona.edu\/povwinona\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/10\/I-RickyBaker-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-991\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julian Dennison as Ricky Baker<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em>Hunt for the Wilderpeople<\/em> is ultimately a story about companionship, and how even the most jaded people\u2014like Neill\u2019s Faulkner\u2014are capable of developing bonds with relatively new additions to their lives, as is the case with Baker. A theme of resilience develops over time as Baker and Faulkner end up on a wild goose chase with the police, who have come to the conclusion that the mourning and mentally unstable Faulkner has abducted Baker. With the only person in his life now gone, Faulkner desires to return to the only place he feels significant: the forest. If there\u2019s one thing people should take away from <em>Hunt for the Wilderpeople<\/em>, it\u2019s that every person deserves a chance at a peaceful existence.
