Spike Lee is known for utilizing many cinematic tropes and techniques throughout his career of over 30-plus films. But perhaps the most effective and impressive aspect of his films is their creative and unique use of music. There are so many instances of Lee using both nondiegetic scores and diegetic soundtracks in refreshing and inventive ways, from She’s Gotta Have It to Malcolm X and even BlacKkKlansman.  In this visual essay, Harrison McCormick and Chris Schroeder look at Lee’s most recognizable film, Do the Right Thing, for within it lies perhaps his greatest and most effective use of music.
